Services, Groups and Facilities

Listed below is a the wide selection of services availiable to the population of the Falkland Islands.

 

Mental Health Resource
Community Psychiatric Nurse / Therapist/ Counsellor (1 qualified), fulltime post; Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist (1 qualified) out patient clinics, one week; twice per year; Consultation with a GP, Community Psychiatric Nurse, or Consultant Psychiatrist (either as an outpatient or phone consultation/ advice).

 

Hospital, Primary Care, Social Services and community wide support
General Practitioners; District Nurse (1 qualified, plus assistants); Practice Nurse (1 qualified); Social Services (2 qualified, plus assistants); Hospital admission (in a private room with minders, who will provide one to one observation, if required).

 

Treatments Available
Mental Health Assessment and Diagnosis; Psychological Therapy; Medication; Counselling (Limited Service); Hospital Admission to KEMH (in a private room, with one to one supervision by minders if required); Alcohol Detoxification (hospital admission and home detoxification service); Respite admissions for the elderly and those with complex mental health needs.

Support Services
Home Help; Acorns Group (meets 2 mornings per week, one evening peer week); Bingo (meets 2 afternoons per week); Blue Bus ( twice weekly service); Day Centre Meals (7 days per week)
Meals on Wheels (7 days per week); Special Needs Department in Schools (Children)
Educational Psychologist (Children); Employment Programme and Training Centre (Young people and adults); Support Worker (Children and families, provided by SWD)

Self Help Groups available in the Falklands


Thursday evening Drop In, KEMH Day Centre; Parent’s Group (Parents with Children who have Special Needs); Asthma Support Group; Parent’s Group (children with special needs); Jelly Tots
Cancer Support & Awareness Trust; Diabetes Support Group; Depression Support Group; Carer’s Forum;


AA based alcohol support group; Alcohol support available from CPN plus, Social Services and Probation service.

 

(Self Help groups often need the input of an interested person or professional to facilitate and coordinate meetings. The AA Alcohol Awareness group, the Depression Support Group and the Carer’s Forum were all groups assisted by Karen Chenery the Community Psychiatric Nurse, due to an increase in her workload Karen can no longer give time to these projects.)
