Report Recomendations:
- The group support the idea of keeping people of more informed and aware of mental health issues in the Falklands. This would have the multiple beneficial effects of people becoming more aware of their own mental health issues, the identification of mental ill-health sooner, people seeking appropriate treatment and less discrimination towards those who have experienced mental ill-health.
- Raise awareness within the young, by education at school and in youth groups throughout the community.
- Utilising the local media to it’s full advantage to raise awareness of mental health issues.
- The launch of the Mental Health Strategy Website to publicise the work of the group, to share the information that we have gathered and provide useful websites where people can get more information on specific mental health issues.
- Additional qualified CPN post to enable the provision of year round care, 7 days per week when required.
- A Day Centre post to allow the provision of day care, five days per week.
- Mental Health Assistants to assist the qualified CPNs.
- Auditing to ensure that the resources meet the needs of the Falklands community
- The group fully support the recommendations made in ‘One for the Road’ Health of the Nation alcohol report., as there is a strong link between alcohol use and mental illness
- The group support the idea of developing a voluntary out of hours telephone helpline service to compliment the existing services offered by health, social and police.
- The group would like to encourage more people to take an interest in alcohol problems within the Falklands and volunteer to help run either the AA group or Buddy system.
- To encourage more members of the local community to develop an interest in mental health services and offer their skills as volunteers in helping at the Day Centre or setting up any of self help voluntary group.
- Education across FIG and the wider Falklands community on mental health issues to tackle ignorance, breakdown barriers and promote a better understanding of mental illness.
- Pro-active policy to encourage the employment of those who have experienced disability within government. The group felt that unless FIG takes the lead, the private sector will not follow.
- Auditing and monitoring of those people who have had mental health problems who are seeking to return to work. i.e. If discrimination exists and people are failing to successfully regain employment even though their health is improved, that measures are taken at a higher level to deal with this problem.
